What is most important for you in teaching?
With regard to the not always popular basic theoretical subject (microeconomics), I consider it important to explain standard microeconomic models using concrete examples from the real economy and to relate them to current events. It always pleases me to see a glimpse of understanding in students of how microeconomic laws can be applied in everyday life.

It brings me joy when microeconomics takes on a concrete shape and when lively discussions and ideas emerge instead of ‘dry’ graphs. In future semesters, I plan to incorporate new elements that we are currently discussing across the faculty. But let’s be surprised what all will be accomplished or someone has to discover those dead ends too. 🙂
From student nominations for this teacher (translated into English):
“Always nice to students! Whether I meet him at the faculty or in town, he always has a nice smile and greeting… He teaches with joy and in a way that everyone understands the topic being discussed, if I didn’t understand something, I wasn’t afraid to ask questions in his lectures.”
“Teaching in his performance does not look like his job, but a mission. He can explain the material in an engaging way, he really wants the students to take away as much as possible. He is very personable, but still fair.”
“…Dr Dobeš can explain a topic, he uses real life examples and his speech can engage any student.”

What is most important for you in teaching?
Considering the subjects I teach, the most important thing for me is to arouse students’ interest in the subject matter and to create an atmosphere of trust, where the student has no problem asking repeatedly if he/she does not understand something. I am always happy when I succeed in breaking the entrenched aversion to mathematics.

My teaching philosophy is very simple and has worked for me for 30 years. The semester is the teacher’s space: to engage and be able to transfer knowledge and skills. The exam period is the space for the student: to convince the teacher that they have understood and can apply practically. Teacher and student are partners who can enrich each other if there is trust and mutual respect.
From student nominations for this teacher (translated into English):
“Friendly, warm attitude with which she supports the student during oral examinations. She has a desire to support the student, to help them, and not to get them on something, catch them, or throw them off. The uploaded lecture material on Moodle was very helpful in understanding the material and creating the term paper. It explains everything in a simple way so that it can be understood well and quickly.”
“Ms. Kolčavová is one of the teachers who can teach. Great explanation of the discussed substance, willingness to explain again the incomprehensible, positive attitude in consultations and email communication I rate very positively.”
“For me, the definition of an ideal teacher. Kind, humane, but strict. She is one of the main reasons why I didn’t give up the KMR course, which I couldn’t imagine ever mastering.”

What is the most important thing for you in teaching?
The most important thing for me in teaching is to build an atmosphere of trust and openness. Therefore, I try to listen to students and respond to their needs. I base my teaching on communication, concrete examples, creativity and linking theory with practice. I strive not only to teach, but also to inspire and support students in their learning. To be nominated by students, for this survey is a valuable recognition that both touched and delighted me – thank you to the students for this wonderful feedback on my teaching.

I especially enjoy the hands-on assignments that students most often work on in teams and then present. In this way I combine creativity, teamwork, critical thinking and real-life situations. For example, in the logistics class, students design and put into practice their own system for evaluating and selecting a supplier for a particular product. Seeing students improve throughout the semester in communication, mutual aid, teamwork, and presentation of assignments is the greatest reward and fulfilment for me that my work is meaningful.
From student nominations for this teacher (translated into English):
“What I appreciate about Dr Macurová is that she has a human approach to her students and I never felt that she was condescending to her students. I also appreciate that even though she is nice to students, she doesn’t let them “jump on her head”.”
“I had a really hard time this year and it was hard for me to go to school. But I always looked forward to my classes with the doctor. It was a class where I could relax, have a nice chat and learn something along the way. The classes were conducted in a more playful way, and I really enjoyed that. To prepare for the test, everything was always clearly on Moodle. I always knew what to look at. It seems to me that the doctor sees us not just as students, but as young people who have a lot of other things to deal with besides school. She was trying to motivate us that we can do everything and stuff. Moreover, she is an honest and fair teacher, I appreciate it very much. Not everyone is like that.”
“Mrs. Doctor is the example of a person who is in the right place and the values I imagine a college teacher to have. She knows how to be human and professional.”

What is the most important thing for you in teaching?
The most important thing for me is connecting theory with real life so that students can see the meaning of what they are learning. I therefore try to teach in such a way as to bring the students closer to the essence, but also to the possibility of practical application of the knowledge. I don’t want them to memorize definitions, to memorize passages from the teaching texts, but we try to practice everything together with examples, cases from practice, and students also try out the knowledge and skills acquired from the class in their term papers on a specific company. I also try to invite practitioners into the classroom and take students on field trips to see how things work in practice.
At the same time, what is very important to me is to communicate with the students, to get to know their needs, to treat them as equals and to be interested in their views and opinions – it is very enriching.
And it makes me very happy when I see their interest in learning new things, when they are curious, when they ask questions and discuss.

The first thing that came to my mind in response to this question is a project for gifted students that I have been running consecutively with two colleagues for fifteen years. Active, skilled students who were not afraid, signed up, and completed many interesting but also time-consuming activities with us. We manage to give the students a chance for their further development beyond their regular studies, especially gaining practical experience of working on company projects and interacting with interesting personalities from corporate and company-wide practice.
But I am probably even more pleased when I meet students I have taught in my courses as our alumni and learn from them that what we have learned together is useful to them in their jobs or personal lives. That is probably the greatest appreciation of a teacher’s work.
From student nominations for this teacher (translated into English):
“What do I appreciate? Kindness, willingness to help, support, trying to understand.”
“Professor Drahomíra Pavelková inspires through her passion for academic excellence and deep commitment to each student’s growth. She combines strong expertise in value-based finance with a caring, respectful teaching style that encourages independent thinking. She imparts knowledge and cultivates a genuine love for research and integrity. I highly recommend her for her outstanding dedication and positive impact.”
“Instead of lecturing, she encourages students to independently analyse situations and propose solutions, guiding them with thoughtful questions and respectful feedback. Her approach fosters critical thinking, a passion for research, and a strong sense of academic integrity.”

What is the most important thing for you in teaching?
In my teaching, I emphasize the meaningfulness of the activities and outcomes I expect from my students. I try to connect them as much as possible with practice and encourage their involvement in real projects. At the same time, I open up space for students for additional challenges and opportunities that go beyond the regular classroom – it’s up to them to take advantage of them.
Students are not just anonymous numbers in STAG for me. I always try to be the one who offers them additional pathways, inspiration and support during their studies. If someone wants to do something extra while studying, gain new experiences or get involved in interesting activities, I am always happy to help and look for ways to make it possible.
I try to make teaching interactive and welcome questions, discussion and different opinions.
I am also open to comments and suggestions from students and try to reflect their feedback.

Each year is varied and brings new opportunities, so it is difficult to choose just one activity.
What I am always very happy about is when I manage to bring together, for example, students from the Czech study programme (full-time and part-time) together with those from abroad as part of a project. This cooperation brings not only a variety of outputs, but also valuable intercultural and interdisciplinary enrichment for all involved.
Among current activities, I will mention the upcoming intergenerational meeting of students and seniors in cooperation with the Wise Network organization, which will take place on 28 May 2025 at FaME. I am also very happy about the advancement of one student team to the finals of the Company Culture Competition, where they will present a solution to the assigned competitive case study. The final will take place on 16 June 2025 in Prague. And in the autumn, I am looking forward to the publication of a children’s educational book, which will be the output of the IGA-K-TRINITY project aimed at developing financial literacy among disadvantaged groups of children.
From student nominations for this teacher (translated into English):
“Dr Tomancová is a very inspiring person. Her very warm approach to students but also all the opportunities she offers to students. She motivates students to be the best version of themselves mostly through her socially responsible projects.”
“She cares about me as a person and doesn’t just see me as my personal student number. If something was not going well with me we worked through it together and got it done. She gives me the energy not to give up studying and to keep improving, discovering and getting involved in projects and new things.”
“I appreciate her willingness to always help. It’s great to know that I can turn to her at any time – whether it’s with learning or other issues. Her support means a lot to me.”
